Just Say NOPE to Plastic; A graphic guide about how plastic became an environmental threat, and what we all can do to reduce out dependence on it
How many books about plastic pollution contain timely information expertly delivered by a soft-spoken raccoon in a straw hat and a cheeky, nose-picking jackalope-squirrel?
One!
Just Say NOPE to Plastic uses humor and expressive animal characters to inform readers about the environmental and physical dangers plastic presents. The book teaches how to properly recycle plastics and includes a shopping and lifestyle guide that can inspire readers to find plastic-free, sustainable choices that fit their lifestyles.
This book is aimed at middle grade to young adult readers and is attractive to all ages. The illustrated pages and humorous style are entertaining and informative on many levels. Without making the reader feel overwhelmed, Just Say NOPE to Plastic discusses complex issues and simple solutions, encouraging the reader to re-imagine how to use less plastic and prioritize sustainability.
I recently graduated from the Master of Fine Art in Design program at the University of Wisconsin – Stout, with a certificate in Sustainable Design. For my master’s thesis, I wanted to create a graphic book that that encompassed all the environmental issues and solutions around global plastic usage.
This is the result of years of personal research into the world of plastic production, the harmful effects of plastic pollution, ways to properly manage plastics, and how to comfortably avoid using plastic in the first place. Drawing is my first language, and comics provide a synthesis of words and images that can reach audiences like no other medium.
